Welcome to my homepage! This is the page about my Professional information.

There is another homepage (in Chinese and a bit out of update) about my personal stuff and my families (a site created and maintained by my father, who only started to learn to use computer in his fifties). Click here if you want to know more about me.

In short, I am not a person who despirately wants to stay in academia doing research for the whole life; nor am I an industry guy who thinks those theoretical research stuffs are nothing realistic. In fact, I am somewhere in-between - I enjoy creating new ideas and inventing novel algorithms for the unexplored domains; but I am also fascinated about the various new technologies and applications that are non-stoppedly appearing in the industry. I really hope that I could create something exciting and useful, based on a combination of both.

Following this thought, starting from 2003, I had spent almost four years to pursue a PhD degree on part-time basis at the School of Computer Engineering, NTU, on the topic of Web Informational Extraction. My advisor is Assoc. Prof. Ng Wee Keong. I was involved in the project WICCAP, which aims to build an application for information modelling, extraction and presentation from the web. My current research interests include Web applications, databases, digital libraries, and data mining. A list of my publications can be found here. (Recently, in an attempt to keep myself closer to academia, I started doing some part time teaching for post-graduate courses at the Division of Information Studies, WKW School of Communications and Information, NTU.)

I started my career in the industry at almost the same time. Currently, I am a Development Manager at Circos, driving the R&D and engineering activities in the company. Circos is a start-up company that used to focus on providing a consumer-facing, colorful and meaningful search engine. It has now transformed itself into a market leader that offers insights on consumer brand perception via social media analytics and intelligence. My most recent involvement is in the development of its flagship product, Brand Karma, which is being used by leading hotel brands in the world to monitor and analyze consumer perception of their brands and act upon it to increase revenue.

Prior to joining Circos, I was a Team Leader at the Singapore Development Centre of Yokogawa Engineering Asia. My main responsibility was on managing the development of server side components and diagnosis functionalities of the Plant Resource Management system. Before this, I worked in the Institute of Systems Science (ISS), where I was involved in the development and maintenance of ISS' in-house e-Learning system, the Virtual Institute. Before joining ISS, I was a Project Officer in Center for Advanced Information Systems, School of Computer Engineering, NTU, working on a Digital Library project called G-Portal, under the supervision of Assoc. Prof. Lim Ee Peng.

Specific things that I have touched (with some depth) during my work include: Python, django, Hadoop, Amazon EC2 (or Cloud Computing, if you prefer buzz words), Java, Applet, JDBC, Servlet, Informix, ColdFusion, Oracle, J/CppUnit, JasperReports, Spring, Visual C++, ADO, MS SQL 2000/2005, OPC, etc.
